DHS senior wrestling captain Jake Genereux made it to the second day of competition at the New England Wrestling Championships in Providence, RI on Saturday, but his hopes of making it to the finals were shattered in a 1-0 loss to Connecticut state champion Zach Maxwell in the quarterfinals.

“I got an escape just as time was expiring on the clock, but the ref waived it off,” said a disappointed Genereux after the match. That one point was the difference between the Duxbury senior captain advancing to the 195-pound semi-final where he would have faced a familiar foe in Brookline’s Ramesses Akamefulla, who he had twice beaten, or going into the consolation rounds. Instead, Genereux had to take the long road back to the podium.

Next up for Genereux was Vermont state champion Brandon Marcoux. While neither wrestler could score a takedown in the first period, Genereux registered two sets of back points from the top position and went on to win a 5-0 decision. Another 5-0 decision over Maine state champion Andrew Pineo had Genereux back in the medal hunt.

Unfortunately for the Duxbury senior things went downhill from there with two heartbreaking losses to Connecticut runner-up Kyle Foster and a re-match for fifth/sixth with Maxwell. The latter match left Genereux with a sour taste in his mouth, as he saw a victory snatched from his hands.

“They had a new rule at New Englands that if you didn’t return your opponent to the mat in five seconds, you got hit with a stall,” said the Duxbury state champion. That rule came back to haunt Genereux, who lost the match in the final seconds after a stall point was awarded to Maxwell.

Finishing sixth was nothing to be ashamed of for the Duxbury standout, who finished his high school wrestling career with a 134-28 record.

It also marked the final two matches at New Englands for teammate and fellow senior captain Brian Leddie, who took opponents by surprise in the 152-pound weight class.
