| Dragons ice two more wins |

Luke Stevens was the star against Quincy, as the sophomore forward scored a first-period hat-trick in leading the Dragons over the Presidents, while the O’Brien twins (Trevor and Shayne) completed the scoring for Duxbury. It could have been worse, but Quincy netminder Ryan Higgins turned aside 41 shots last Wednesday night. It was back to Kingston on Saturday night and the Dragons had their ups and downs in taking care of the Panthers. Having destroyed W-H during the first week of 2013, 9-0, it was hard for the Dragons to get up for the Panthers. But after only leading 1-0 after the first 15 minutes of play, it became evident they needed to get their act together. It didn’t take long for that to happen, as senior captain Bobby O’Brien picked up a loose puck in the skates of W-H goalie Mike Bonavita and poked it into the net just 1:08 seconds into the second period. It looked like Duxbury was now on its way to victory. But in less than two minutes the Panthers scored a pair of goals and the Dragons were now forced to get back to work once again. Junior Nick Marrocco got the lead back quickly, as he was stationed in front of the Panther net and tipped home a Zack Snelling shot at the 9:39 mark to give the Dragons a 3-2 lead they would never relinquish. Duxbury was now feeling more comfortable with 7:14 left in the period when Trevor O’Brien crossed the blue line and drifted to the high slot where he blasted a shot past Bonavita that went up and under the crossbar to make it 4-2 after two periods. The pesky Panthers would not go away in the third period and had the Dragons sweating with 12:51 left on the clock when they scored on a break-away to narrow the deficit to one. Mike Doyle would end Duxbury’s anxiety just over a minute later when he picked up a rebound from a Bobby O’Brien scoring bid and beat Bonavita to make the score 5-3. The rout was now on and Marrocco made sure it stayed that way when he beat his defender and slid the puck under a sprawling Bonavita for a 6-3 lead. Junior defenseman Scott Whear would finish off the evening for the Dragons when he scored his first goal of the season with 7:21 remaining, firing a wrist shot from the high slot that beat the panther netminder to his stick side. “Even though we took care of Whitman-Hanson the first time around, they played aggressive hockey and fought back to tie us,” said Duxbury Coach John Blake. “I was impressed with how we dealt with that adversity. I told the kids that a lot of the teams we beat so far are going to be tougher to beat the second time around.” Despite the team’s impressive record, Blake still thinks they can play better. “I like the energy we played with in the third period,” said Blake. “We still have to play a complete 45-minute game which we haven’t done yet. Once we do that we’ll be a very good team. We’ll find out how good we are when we go down to the Cape. I know our kids are excited to be playing at that level of competition. But right now we are just going to concentrate on getting ready for Silver Lake.” That game will take place on Wednesday night at 7:50 p.m. at the Hobomock Arena in Pembroke. |
