Lady Dragons pumped up for Falmouth
By Mike Halloran
Wednesday, January 30, 2013 09:30 AM

The Lady Dragons took care of one Cape Cod opponent this weekend. But they will face the one they really want on Wednesday night in Falmouth.

After taking back-to-back victories over Dennis-Yarmouth, 4-0 and 6-1, Duxbury can now concentrate on getting back at the Clippers, who ended Duxbury’s chances at a perfect season back on Jan. 5.

This has become a heated rivalry between the two squads after Duxbury defeated Falmouth in last year’s State championship game.

D-Y was just what the team needed after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Westwood to start the week.

The Lady Dragons dominated the Dolphins on both nights; unloading staggering shot totals in both games that wasn’t reflected in the scores.

On Saturday night at The Bog, Duxbury opened with a three-goal salvo in the first period. Hannah Murphy would score the game’s first goal with 8:06 left on the clock; the first of what looked like a potentially huge night for the senior captain.

After being stopped by goaltender Emily Gallagher, Murphy scored right off the face-off to open the floodgates.

Just over a minute later Meredith Wright was perfectly stationed at the right post to knock home a rebound for a 2-0 lead and sophomore forward Olivia Crowley would finish off Duxbury’s first-period scoring with an assist to Zoe Griffin.

In the second period Wright would score her second of the night on the power-play with an assist to freshman Julia Nolan and Griffin would make it 5-0 when she knocked home a rebound with 9:02 remaining in the period.

D-Y eighth-grader Mannon Ceravone would end Rachel Myette’s shutout bid late in the second period when her shot deflected high over Myette’s head and rolled in behind her to make it 5-1.

Sophomore Kate Donato replaced Myette in net to start the third period and was immediately tested, coming through with a big save to get her feet wet.

Donato also survived a power-play opportunity by the Dolphins with 5:14 to go, and junior forward Jacqui Nolan capped the evening for the Lady Dragons when she gathered in a pass at the blue line and skated in alone on Gallagher with Duxbury’s sixth goal of the evening.

“We were much better tonight than Friday night,” said Coach Friend Weiler. “They were alert and hitting their open teammates with good passes. Now that we have qualified for the tournament it seems like the pressure is off, so we just need to work harder and fine tune our game as we get ready for the play-offs.”

After travelling to the Cape on Wednesday night, Duxbury will return home on Saturday for a 3:45 p.m.  encounter with Pembroke at The Bog.
