Genereux Wins KP Tournament
Wednesday, December 12, 2012 10:00 AM

The third time was the charm for Duxbury senior wrestling captain Jake Genereux, who won the 182-pound championship at the King Philip Tournament in Wrentham on Saturday. Genereux took home silver medals the last two years at the 10-team tournament that features top teams from Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Genereux (4-0) was in the mix for outstanding wrestler of the day with a 12-2 major decision over Walpole’s Kyle Robbins and then a second period pin of Franklin’s Brandon Miller in the championship quarterfinals. That set up a rematch with Winchester rival Joe Fallon in the semi-finals. Genereux took a 2-0 lead with a takedown halfway through the first period, but Fallon proved to be tough on bottom, not allowing the senior captain to turn him. Starting the second period in neutral, Genereux scored again on his signature low single. However, Fallon would earn a one-point escape, but that’s all the Winchester star could muster against Genereux, who would win for the third time with a 4-1 decision.

In the finals, Genereux would face Bishop Hendricken senior Hunter Boesh of Rhode Island. With little knowledge of his opponent, the Duxbury senior had no intentions of bringing home another silver medal. “No one remembers who comes in second,” said Genereux shortly before he took the mat. It was clear from the outset that this night belonged to the hard working Duxbury wrestler, who put on a show of his technique with an impressive 15-0 technical fall.

As a team, Duxbury finished in sixth place, but with Coach Kyle McCarthy only bringing seven of his veteran wrestlers (out of the fourteen weight classes) for this competitive early-season event, that was quite a feat. Junior Jim Chappuis helped carry the load for the Dragon grapplers with his fourth-place finish. After a first-round loss, Chappuis rallied to win three straight matches, by beating New Bedford’s Tyler Jacobs with a 17-6 major decision, Franklin’s Brian Doherty with a hard-fought 2-1 decision, and then by pinning Bishop Hendricken’s John Grasso. With a chance to win a bronze medal, Chappuis took the mat in the 145 lb. weight class for the fifth time of the day. Unfortunately for the Duxbury junior, his run would end with a 3-0 loss to Brockton’s Hans Geffrard.

Also scoring points for Duxbury were seniors JP Geiger, who recorded two pins in the 138-pound weight class before leaving the competition with a muscle strain, senior co-captain Brian Leddie, who had two wins at 160, Nick Kates with a pin at 113 and Brendan Gillis, who also had a win and a pin in the 138 lb. weight class. Sophomore Kyle Auer wrestled very well in the 170-pound weight class and also recorded a pin.
