| From the Athletic Director: Requirements needed for fall sports |

The fall sports season in only a few weeks away. This is to remind all students who wish to tryout/practice for a fall sports team that they must hand in all paperwork before the first day of their sport. For the 2012 fall season all prospective student-athletes must hand in the following: Signed permission slip/consent form Signed mandatory concussion form User fee of $225 (checks made out to Duxbury High School) An updated physical on file in the DHS nurse’s office In June, the MIAA changed the regulations on athletic physicals to be in compliance with Massachusetts Department of Health standards. Physicals are now good for 13 months. In past years, if a student had a physical within 13 months on the first day of a season’s practice they would be cleared for that entire season. With this new regulation, a student may become ineligible during the middle of the season. All forms can be found on the athletic department Web-page at duxbury.k12.ma.us. Also on the athletic department Web page, you will find information on the first handful of days for practices and/or tryouts. We are no longer using highschoolsports.net as our scheduling page, as the MIAA has created a scheduling system. A link to the new site can be found on the athletics Web page. Throughout the summer they are fixing some minor glitches, so feel free to send me an e-mail if you have a question concerning one sport’s schedule. On Monday, August 20, the athletic department will be holding an orientation for incoming 9th -graders and their parents who may wish to participate in interscholastic athletics while attending Duxbury High School. The orientation will be held in the DHS student lounge at 6 p.m. A “nuts and bolts” overview of the paperwork, expectations, and other information that is pertinent for a student-athlete at Duxbury High School will be given on that date. There will be a question and answer session at the end of the meeting to go over any unresolved questions concerning your child’s athletic endeavors at Duxbury High School. This introduction meeting is by no means mandatory, but will aide in answering several of the questions that often come up when your child is a participant in interscholastic athletics. If you have any questions about fall sports and/or the orientation feel free to call or e-mail the athletic department. E-mail: tholdgate@duxbury.k12.ma.us, office: 781-934-7668. |
