No contest in girls’ Patriot League swimming championships
By Denise Buckley, Clipper Contributor
Wednesday, February 08, 2012 09:00 AM

The Duxbury girls’ swimming and diving team blew away the competition at the Patriot League Championships over the weekend, winning by more than 200 points.

Juniors Ellie Johnson and Shelby Rader led the Lady Dragons with two wins apiece, while 21 girls scored individual points for the team including the three relay teams that took home gold. Divers Kelsey Golden took second place in the diving competition with 366 points, while Sam Tougas was seventh (326) and Avery Pisani was eighth (279.5).

The 200-yard medley relay team of Rader, Johnson, Abby Mullen and Hannah Hutchinson led off the meet with a first-place finish. Later in the meet the 200-yard freestyle relay of Hutchinson, Katie Eagan, Caroline McSherry and Mullen and the 400-yard relay team that included Rader, Johnson, Jess Goldberg and Mullen would also out-swim the competition to take first.

Eagan was up right away in the 200-yard freestyle and added points for the team by taking third with a 2:11.78.  Also contributing to that event were Lexi Leclerc (11th) and Lucy Quigley (15th). Next up in the 200 IM was Johnson, who blazed to a first-place finish. Just behind her to take third was Michaela Morris.  Haley Chatlin and Aly Wolff also added points.

Rader (26.63) and Hannah Hutchinson (26.65) would swim the closest race of the meet, taking first and second in the 50-yard freestyle. Caroline McSherry and co-captain Laura Husted also finished in the top 10. Rader would also win the 100-yard freestyle in a season-low time of 56.60. Following in fourth was Jessie Goldberg, Mary O’Sullivan (7th), and Mackenzie Bright (11th).

The 100-yard butterfly was another third place finish for Eagan, while Miranda VanDingstee (6th), Michaela Morris (7th) and Hannah Riddle (10th) were the other Duxbury competitors. VanDingstee would dive back in for the 500 freestyle and cruise her way to third with her first State-qualifying time of 5:50.20.  Following right behind in fifth was Elizabeth Buckley.  Emily Nichols and co-captain Kassie Sweeney would take 7th and 9th.

The 100-yard backstroke was the only event that the Lady Dragons couldn’t break into the top three spots. They would have to settle for fifth (Mary O’Sullivan), sixth (Olivia Zelvis), seventh (Krista Librett) and eighth place (Chatlin). Duxbury would sweep the next event taking the top three places, as well as seventh. Johnson would take her second first-place finish, followed by Nichols, Jill Coghlan and Caela Shay.

Eight girls were named Patriot League All-Stars and included: Jill Coghlan, Katie Eagan, Kelsey Golden, Hannah Hutchinson, Ellie Johnson, Emily Nichols, Shelby Rader and Miranda Vandingstee.

Up next for the Lady Dragons is the South/Central Sectionals at MIT on Saturday at 9 a.m., followed by the Division II States at Harvard on Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m.
