Golfers knocked off throne
Wednesday, November 09, 2011 11:16 AM

The Duxbury boys’ golf team saw their chance at a three-peat dissolve Monday afternoon when they finished fifth in the Division 2 State golf championship at the Juniper Hills Golf Course in Northborough.

After moving last week’s scheduled championship from western Mass. due to the surprise snow storm, the MIAA settled on Juniper Hills, which was still not in ideal conditions with wet fairways and bumpy greens, according to Duxbury Coach Jack Stoddard.

“This was a much easier venue than we expected,” said Stoddard of the par 70 course that featured a temporary ninth hole. “It kind of leveled the playing field for everyone because you could shoot a double-bogey and come right back with a birdie on the next hole and be back in the match.”

Despite their fifth-place finish, the Dragons (306) were only eight shots off the top, with Masconomet winning the title with a 298. They were followed by Hudson (302), Concord-Carlisle (304) and Pentucket (305).

“The other teams played well,” said Stoddard. “But everyone was out there to knock us off.”

Nick Drago led the way for Duxbury with a 73, while Cam Daley (76), James Mattes (78), and Bobby O’Brien (79) rounded out Duxbury’s scoring.  James Ball (81) and Curtis Owen (83) also competed.

“I wanted to thank my kids for all the hard work they did getting ready for the tournament,” said Stoddard. “They put in plenty of practice time over the weekends. I also wanted to thank my assistants, John Blake and Tom Benoit, for another successful year, along with our parent’s booster group, who supplied us with plenty of team meals and assistance.”
