It was just a dream two years ago, but through the efforts of Duxbury friends Barbara Vetsch and Danielle Snelling, volleyball came to be a varsity sport after just one season of intramural action and playing a JV schedule.

The Duxbury boys’ golf team had a strange week, as they were convincingly beaten by Hanover, 244-269, destroyed Middleboro, 234-299, and then succumbed to Barnstable, 220-235, in a match shortened to eight holes due to darkness.

The Duxbury boy’s and girls’ cross-country teams ran in the 1st Annual Bob McIntyre Twilight Cross Country Meet at the Barnstable fairgrounds over the weekend. Sponsored by MSTCA, the race featured 49 schools participating in Sunday night’s event.

Though the words may have sounded harsh, Coach John Tocci’s point came across loud and clear last week, as his boys’ soccer team bounced back from a pair of sub-par performances to knock off North Quincy (2-0) and upset Hingham (2-0) at the beginning of a five-game homestand to end the regular-season schedule.

After reeling off five straight wins, capped by an impressive 31-14 road win over Division 1 Xaverian last week in Westwood, it wasn’t surprising that the No. 2 ranked Dragons would suffer a letdown as they returned to Patriot League action on Friday night with a 21-0 win in Scituate.

The Duxbury girls’ field hockey team will go after its third straight Patriot League title on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts the Scituate Sailors at 3:45 p.m. Scituate remains a half game back of the Lady Dragons and a win or a tie by Duxbury would clinch the crown.

Michela North’s 16 kills and 13 service points, along with 21 service points from Cara Vetsch, led the Duxbury girls’ volleyball team to a three-set win over Rockland (25-6, 25-7, 25-9) last Thursday in Duxbury.

On July 1 a new regulation was put into place standardizing procedures for people involved in the prevention, training, management, and return-to-activity decision regarding students who incur head injuries while involved in extracurricular activities, including but not limited to interscholastic sports, in order to protect their health and safety.

Freshman Jack Griffin shot a low round of 41 to lead the Duxbury boys’ golf team to a 224-233 win over North Quincy last week on the Duxbury Yacht Club course. Griffin recorded five pars along the way, while senior Jeff Gaita was a stroke behind at 42 and finished with four pars.
