(Duxbury senior captain Bobby Boyle is flanked by head coach Kyle McCarthy and asst. coach Matt Jeffrey after winning the 220 lb. championship at the DII South Sectional wrestling tournament on Saturday.)

Apparently good things do come in small packages because the Duxbury HS wrestling team had only six wrestlers compete at the Division 2 South Sectional Individual Tournament on Saturday at Whitman-Hanson. Three of those grapplers punched their ticket to the state tournament that will be held at Reading Memorial High School on Friday and Saturday.

Hoops in contention for post season spot
By Mike Halloran, Sports Editor
Wednesday, February 08, 2012 09:00 AM

The Dragons survived a sluggish first-half offensive performance to beat Middleboro on Friday night, 56-46, raising their record to 6-8 with six regular season games to go. Duxbury must win four of its final six games in order to make the MIAA tournament.

Offensive consistency has been the downfall for this year’s boys’ basketball team, and it was in evidence last week when the Dragons had trouble pulling away from the Sachems with a 10-5 first-quarter advantage.

The boys’ hockey team looked like its chance at post-season play was headed in the wrong direction on Saturday afternoon when it took on a poor Quincy High team and trailed 1-0 midway through the third period.

“We were pretty much carrying the play in the first two periods, but their goalie (Peter Junta) was hot,” said Duxbury Coach John Blake. “Once we banged home that first one the flood gates opened.”

The Duxbury girls’ hockey team faced its biggest challenge of the regular season on Friday afternoon at The Bog and came away with a 4-0 shutout win over the once-beaten Barnstable Red Raiders.

The victory solidifies Duxbury’s position as the top girls’ hockey team south of Boston, as the Red Raiders suffered their second loss in a week (Hingham) and saw their record drop to 10-2.

After a 1-5 start under new head coach Bob Sullivan, everything seems to be falling into place for the Lady Dragons who ripped off their fifth straight win on Friday night with a 66-28 trouncing of Hanover in Patriot League action.

Playing on back-to-back nights after pulling away from Marshfield in the fourth quarter the previous night for a 58-43 win over the Rams, Duxbury came back in grand fashion at home and raced to a 14-0 lead in the first four minutes of the win over the Indians.
