Unbeaten streak locks up tourney bid
By Mike Halloran
Wednesday, February 22, 2012 09:00 AM

The inability to find the net and a lack of veteran players seemed to put a damper on the start of the hockey season for the Dragons, but the youth that replaced them gained valuable experience as their ice time increased.

As a result, Coach John Blake’s squad road an eight-game unbeaten streak to qualify for the post-season Division I tournament by finishing the regular season with a 9-6-4 record with three games remaining in the Cape Cod Classic.

Kerri Connolly (DHS ’08) is a graduate assistant women’s golf coach at California University in Pennsylvania.. Because Connolly has full eligibility to play ice hockey, she tried out and made the school’s club hockey team. Because of golf commitments she only played in 9 games but had 8 points and 1 game winning goal.… Cornell’s gymnastics team placed second at the 2012 Big Red Invitational last week at Teagle Gymnasium. Cornell claimed first place in two of the day’s four events, with sophomore Lexi Schupp (DHS ’10) earning 9.700 on bars. Schupp (9.650) rounded out the Top-3 for beam, giving the Red a 1-2-3 sweep.

North hits 1,000, wins with 3.3 seconds left
By Mike Halloran
Wednesday, February 22, 2012 09:00 AM

Junior Michela North scored 19 points last Tuesday night in Hingham to lead the Lady Dragons to an exciting 50-48 win over the Harborwomen. What made the evening even more special was the All-Star forward joined an elite group of women who have scored 1000 points in their DHS basketball careers.

North had an opportunity to break the 1000-point barrier with six seconds left in the first quarter, but her free throw bounced off the rim delaying the celebration by Duxbury fans. It didn’t seem to bother the forward who scored six points to give Duxbury a 17-5 lead after the first eight minutes of play. With anticipation growing on every trip down the court, Duxbury fans finally had their chance to cheer with 6:36 left in the second quarter when North buried a pair of free throws for 1001 career points: the fastest it has been done by any DHS female player.

Junior Jake Genereux faces off against Burlington’s Luke Nigro in the 152 lb. championship quarterfinals.  A near reversal late in the third period would have given Genereux the win, but instead, Nigro would hang on to a 1-0 decision and eventually earn a trip to the finals.  A near pin of top-ranked Mariano Restivo-Lage in the first period would have kept Genereux’s hopes alive, but the Natick star would not be denied his second trip to the podium.
