| Reader's View: Concerns with schools’ designs |

I have attended many of the middle/high school building committee meetings over the past year and have asked several questions: most have been answered, some are still pending. I want to thank the architect Dennis Daly for trying to answer them and Dr. Tantillo for looking into the possibility of making the cafeteria more efficient by changing the eating plan. The design aspect I am most concerned about is the open corridors on the second and third floors. The 42 inch railings have been raised to a 48 inch height from the corridor floor, but are still open to the main floor below. Glass walls a minimum of six feet in height would eliminate any “lean-over” load or the drop of miscellaneous materials onto the main floor and be more appropriate in a teenage environment. Over 3,000 residents of Duxbury voted at the ballot on the schools, yet at the open forum last week, only nine or ten people attended. It was an excellent presentation of the new school architecture plans. Another public forum is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 27 in Alden room 106 at 7 p.m. Bring your questions, share your expertise, offer suggestions to the building committee and the architect. Come see where your children will go to school. Bob Doyle Old Cove Road |
