Gordon Wolcott Deming, 84 of Duxbury, died Dec. 10 with his wife of 36 years, Genevieve Kirslis Deming, at his side. Mr. Deming had an accomplished career in the antiques business, not only as a purveyor of fine antiques, but as a highly skilled cabinetmaker and noted expert in pewter, antique tools and period furniture. He was born in Springfield on Aug. 9, 1927 to Oliver Wolcott Deming and Marion Cloutier Deming and was a direct descendant of the 19th Governor of Connecticut, Oliver Wolcott. He was raised in Westfield along with his brother Richard, who predeceased him. Mr. Deming graduated from the Clarke School for the Deaf in Northampton. After graduation, he successfully created and owned Deming Craftsmen in Granby, Conn., specializing in finely hand-made replicas of Early American Colonial furniture and furnishings. After many years in business, Mr. Deming married Genevieve and moved to Duxbury where, together, they started Genevieve and Gordon Deming Antiques. As well-known and highly respected antique dealers, they travelled the country with their business, exhibiting at many prestigious antique shows in New England, Pennsylvania and Florida. Mr. Deming was a member of the Pewter Collectors Club of America, the Early American Industries Association; and the Midwest Tool Collector`s Association. In addition to his wife, Mr. Deming leaves his son, Frederick of Rhode Island; his daughter Linda of Maine; his stepdaughter, Kathleen Keenan Snow and her husband, Attorney Christopher J. Snow of Provincetown and Miami, Fla.; and his grandson, Willem of Maine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in Mr. Deming’s name. A burial service will be private. Arrangements by the Shepherd Funeral Home, Kingston. |
