Residents spread out in many rooms of the Duxbury Senior Center on Sunday to warm up and charge their electronic devices.

Senior Center staff worked extended hours over the weekend, after a major snowstorm pummelled the South Shore, causing widespread power outages that were still being felt on Tuesday afternoon. 

Suzanne Errasti and Linda Hayes kept the Senior Center open on Saturday and Sunday as a warming center for residents to come in and warm up, grab a cup of coffee and charge their devices. 

Hayes said the center opened at about 8 a.m. on Saturday morning and was quiet for most of the morning, as the storm hung around the South Shore and residents were unable to leave their homes. On Saturday afternoon, however, more people visited the center. 

"We definitely had many seniors come in who were familiar with the Senior Center and who knew it would be open," Hayes said. "But we also had a lot of families, couples and young people."

Sunday at the Senior Center was quite busy, Hayes said, as more people were able to leave their homes. Roche Bros. donated some food, so the center was able to feed residents bagels, tea and hot chocolate.

Senior Center director Joanne Moore said there have been a lot of people coming in and out of the center over the past few days.

"People who have come in have been very friendly and chatty," Moore said. "They have been swapping storm stories and sharing their experiences over a cup of coffee while warming up from the storm."

Hayes said visitors sat around sharing stories of the storm and reading the newspaper. 

"It felt like an old fashioned Sunday morning," Hayes said. "People were sitting down with a cup of coffee and the newspaper; it's nice to see newspapers aren't dead."

Hayes said she was happy to have the ability to help residents warm up from the storm and it was worth the long hours. 

"It was a long weekend, but it was very rewarding," she said. "We were able to make people happy and that was a really great feeling."

The Senior Center was open until midnight on Monday and will remain open until midnight on Tuesday as well. With power restored to many residents on Tuesday afternoon, Moore said she does not foresee having to keep the center open late on Wednesday. 

"The power has been restored to The Village at Duxbury, so many seniors will be able to stay in their own homes for the night," Moore said. "It seems like crews are making good progress and power will hopefully be restored for everyone today."
