The last two days of the historical dig on Chestnut Street unearthed a discovery of great historical significance. “Everything really came into focus,†said Craig Chartier of the Plymouth Archeology Rediscovery Project. “We couldn’t have hoped for more.â€
The two-week dig had been a success right from the start, as volunteers excavated dozens of artifacts from Pilgrim and Native American times. They also found a stone foundation, proving the spot was the location of Duxbury’s second meetinghouse. (The first was located where Standish Cemetery is now, the third is where the First Parish Church is on Tremont Street.)
But it was on the last day of digging that the team really stumbled upon something special.
Diggers discovered a series of post holes, 20 inches in diameter, along the north wall of the foundation. This means the building was originally constructed by means of “post-in-hole construction.†This was the way buildings were built at Plimoth Plantation, and it was thought that the technique hadn’t been used since.

“This is a very exciting project,†said Patrick Browne, president of the society. “We've got a big list of people who have signed up.†|

The Community Preservation Act trust fund payment distributed this week to 135 eligible municipalities was the lowest since the program began, according to data from the state Department of Revenue. The FY10 base payment of a 34.8 percent match to locally raised funds is over 65 percent lower than the dollar for dollar match received in the first six years of the CPA program. DOR estimates that the distribution will fall again next fiscal year, likely as low as 28 percent for many communities. |

State Representative Daniel Webster (R –Pembroke) lashed out at Beacon Hill Democrats attempting to build support for a bill to fill the vacant US Senate seat left with the passing of the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy. This afternoon, the full assembly of the Massachusetts House of Representatives debated a legislative proposal that would grant the Governor unilateral authority to appoint an interim successor. Webster was deeply concerned with this initiative given the fact that Beacon Hill Democrats had previously rejected such a proposal.
